In one sentence. Fala asks for no account, no email and no last name. Your messages are sent to an artificial intelligence model so it can reply, and they are kept on our servers only if you explicitly allow it.
1. Who you are talking to
The Fala teacher is an artificial intelligence, not a person. The first name, the face and the tone are there to make the conversation natural. No human teacher reads your messages.
2. What the app sends to our servers
| Data | Why | Retention |
|---|---|---|
A random device identifier (for example 3f2a…), created
by the app |
Counting today's messages and applying the daily limit | Until the account is deleted, or the app is reinstalled |
| The text of your messages and the context the teacher needs (level, language learned, mistakes already spotted, words already seen) | Getting the reply, the correction and the translation | For the duration of the request. Kept afterwards only if you turned on "Help improve the teacher" |
| A technical log: date, language, kind of call, number of billed text units, success or failure | Watching costs and failures | Does not contain the text of your messages |
| Only if you report a message: that message, the reason and your note | Correcting what the model does badly (see 4 ter) | Twelve months at most |
Fala does not collect: name, email address, phone number, contacts, location, or advertising identifiers. There are no ads and no advertising trackers.
2 bis. Usage measurement
The app uses Google Analytics for Firebase to count what people do with it: screens opened, messages sent, role plays started, quizzes finished, purchases. These events carry the language learned, the level and the kind of action, never the content of your messages, your notes or your corrections, and never your first name.
Advertising identifier collection is switched off in the app, and this data is not used for advertising. Google acts as a processor for it.
3. What stays on your phone
Your conversations, corrections, notes, learner profile and settings are stored on the device. They leave the phone only in the request described above.
The photo you may put on your avatar is copied into the app's own files and never leaves the phone: it is not sent to our servers, and the teacher never sees it. Removing it from Profile deletes the file.
Profile also lets you export your data to a file in order to move to another phone. That file holds your conversations and your profile, never your subscription. Once it is on your phone or in your cloud drive, it is an ordinary file: the app no longer protects it, and whoever opens it can read it.
3 bis. The microphone
The flag button in the message field lets you dictate instead of typing. Dictation uses the speech recognition built into your phone, provided by Google on most Android devices: the audio goes to that service, under Google's terms, and Fala receives only the resulting text. Fala never records or stores audio, and never listens without you pressing the button.
4. The artificial intelligence model
To produce replies, corrections and translations, our servers pass the necessary text to Google's Gemini API, acting as a processor. Google handles that content under the terms of its developer API. No data identifying you is sent: no name, no email, not even the device identifier.
4 bis. The quiz photos
Some quiz questions show a photo. These photos come from Pixabay and are loaded by your phone directly from their servers, which means Pixabay sees the IP address of the connection, as any website you visit would. We send them no identifier, and the search word used to find the photo carries nothing about you.
4 ter. Reporting a message
When you report a message from the teacher, we keep the reported text, the reason, the note you may add and the device identifier. Nothing else from the conversation is sent. It is stored on our server and read by the publisher alone, on a page protected by a secret key, in order to correct what the model does badly. Reports are kept for at most twelve months, then deleted.
This is the one case where a message is kept without the "Help improve the teacher" consent: you asked for it by reporting, and Google Play requires that a report can be acted upon.
5. The "Help improve the teacher" consent
Off by default. When on, it allows your exchanges to be kept on our servers in order to improve the quality of corrections. You can turn it off at any time in Profile; storing stops immediately. Refusing it limits no feature of the app.
What is kept carries no identifier: neither your first name nor the device id. Only the sentence you wrote, the reply and the corrections are kept, along with the language you are learning, the language of explanations and your level. Your interests, your reason for learning and the situations from your life that the teacher remembers are not part of it.
The trade-off is deliberate: without an identifier, those rows can no longer be tied back to you, so deleting your account has nothing to erase among them. That is the price of the opposite promise, the one we prefer: nothing in what is kept can show that you wrote it. Exchanges kept before 25 September 2026 carried a device id, and remain erasable like the rest.
A conversation is free text: if you write your own first name or a personal detail in it, it will be kept with the rest. We do not look for it and do not tie it to anything, but we would rather say so.
6. Deleting your data
In the app: Profile → Delete my account. The app first asks the server to erase what it holds (counters, log, stored conversations), then wipes the phone. If the server cannot be reached, nothing is erased and the app says so, so that the identifier allowing this deletion is not lost.
You can also write to [email protected]: give the device identifier, shown at the bottom of the Profile screen (tap it to copy it), and deletion happens within thirty days.
7. Your rights
Under the GDPR you have rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction and objection. The legal basis is your consent for storing conversations, and performance of the service for the rest. Write to [email protected]. You may also lodge a complaint with your data protection authority.
8. Hosting
Fala's servers are hosted by OVH, in France.
9. Children
Fala is not intended for children under 16 and does not knowingly collect their data.
10. Changes
Any change to this page will be dated at the top. A change that would widen the use of your data will be asked for inside the app, not slipped into a text.
